Source Data

The data has been collected through days of webscraping in Metacritic.com. The analysis below is based on all the games release before 1st June,2017. Now off with the analysis.

Classification

The score classification is done as follows:

  • Rated : Titles having minimum number of reviews as per metacritic policy
  • Exceptional: Titles with Critic Metascore>=90 or User Score>=9
  • Great: Titles with Critic Metascore>=80 or User Score>=8
  • Good: Titles with Critic Metascore>=70 or User Score>=7

As you can see, we refrained from categorizing anything lower than 70 because a console is defined by the good games it have. Moreover, due to wide availability of variety of game development tools, a lot of low quality games flooding the market and they can’t really affect the reception of a console is.

Top Developers

Starting off with quantity developers. Telltale Games leads by big margin with 31 rated releases with all those five parter episodic game releases with 25 titles garnering good or better reviews but no title broke the barrier of 90.

Same facts hold true for the other four top developers by quantity. They did not have a single exceptional title by their name even with behemoths like Capcom,EA Sports and Ubisoft Montreal failing to break the barrier of 90.

Top five quantity developers failed to manage a single exceptional title

Moving to quality and we got all the names we love there. The good folks of CD Projekt Red Studio from Poland lead with 3 exceptional releases against their name with all three games of Witcher 3 saga in the list.

No other developer managed to muster multiple exceptional releases with 8 other studios having one each.

Only one Microsoft platform exclusive((Not XBO exclusive) developer,Playground Games of Forza Horizon 3 fame managed an exceptional release.

Only one Microsoft platform exclusive((Not XBO exclusive) developer,Playground Games of Forza Horizon 3 fame managed an exceptional release.

Exceptional may be too difficult for most developers considering the budget of modern AAA games. Lowering down to great releases, Telltale Games leads the field with 7 Great or better releases with EA Sports and Playground Games trailing not far behind.

Developer Rating

When it comes to consistency, usual developers we love are at the top with Witcher developer CD Projekt Red on top whilePlaydead - developer of Inside and Limbo next. Bliazzard completes the top 3.

Microsoft exclusive(Not XBO exclusive) studio Moon Studios comes in at number 4 with XBO exclusive Halo developer 343 Industries scores a good 84.5.

CD Projekt Red also leads in the user score making it the only studio to feature in top 3 of both Critic and User Score in both PS4 and XBO. Kudos, to these amazing developers from Poland. Can’t wait to play Cyberpunk 2077.

As seen in the case of PS4, users seem to love DONTNOD Entertainment more than critics as again they are on top. From Software also features. No wonder why we are observing the influx of punishing Soulsborne games in recent times.

No XBO or Microsoft exclusive AAA developer features in the top 10 which goes on to explain the lukewarm reception the console received.

No XBO or Microsoft exclusive AAA developer features in the top 10 of User Rating
